Project Overview
This branding and packaging design project focuses on the creation of a custom Mountain Dew flavor collection that reimagines the brand through bold, playful, and visually immersive flavor identities. The goal was to develop a cohesive series of beverage can designs that maintain the recognizable energy of the Mountain Dew brand while introducing unique flavor concepts through color, illustration, and typography.
The collection includes six flavor variations: Blue Raspberry, Cotton Candy, Firework, Grape, Pineapple Mango, and Strawberry Watermelon. Each design uses vibrant color palettes, stylized flavor imagery, and dynamic graphic elements to create packaging that feels energetic, refreshing, and instantly recognizable. The project explores how an established brand identity can be expanded creatively while preserving consistency across a multi-flavor product line.
The Problem
Many soda and energy drink brands rely heavily on repetitive packaging systems that can make flavor variations feel visually indistinct. In a competitive beverage market, consumers are often drawn toward products with packaging that communicates flavor, excitement, and personality immediately. The challenge for this project was to create a collection of Mountain Dew-inspired flavor concepts that stand out visually while still feeling connected to the recognizable brand identity.
Another challenge involved balancing the highly recognizable Mountain Dew logo with new flavor-focused visuals. Since the brand already carries strong visual recognition, the packaging needed to support the established identity while introducing enough variation to make each flavor feel unique and memorable.
Additionally, the project required creating strong visual hierarchy on a cylindrical can surface while ensuring that the designs remained clean, readable, and impactful from multiple viewing distances.
Target Audience
The target audience includes teenagers, young adults, gamers, and consumers who are drawn to bold flavors, high-energy branding, and visually exciting products. This audience is highly responsive to colorful packaging, novelty flavors, and collectible product designs that feel expressive and trend-driven.
The flavor concepts were designed to appeal to consumers looking for fun and immersive beverage experiences. Bright colors, playful themes, and recognizable flavor imagery help create emotional connections while reinforcing the energetic personality associated with the Mountain Dew brand.
The packaging also appeals to social-media-driven audiences who value products that feel visually shareable, eye-catching, and contemporary.
Concept & Approach
The concept behind this collection centers on creating “flavor personalities” through color and visual storytelling. Each can was designed to communicate its flavor instantly through coordinated palettes, themed graphics, and supporting illustrations while maintaining a unified system across the series.
The approach combines the bold typography and high-energy identity associated with Mountain Dew with playful flavor-inspired graphics that create distinct visual experiences for each variation. The use of dynamic stripe patterns, gradients, and flavor illustrations reinforces movement and excitement while giving each can a strong sense of individuality.
Rather than relying on minimal packaging trends, the designs embrace loud, energetic visuals that reflect the intensity and fun associated with soda and energy drink culture.
Visual System & Design Elements
A cohesive visual system is established through consistent logo placement, angled stripe graphics, flavor illustration placement, and coordinated color schemes. While each flavor introduces unique colors and imagery, all cans share a common structure that allows the collection to feel unified as a complete product line.
The top portion of each can features bold diagonal stripe patterns that create movement, depth, and visual energy. These patterns help reinforce the fast-paced, high-energy identity associated with the brand while allowing each flavor to establish its own mood through color.
Each flavor uses carefully selected color palettes to communicate taste and personality:
Blue Raspberry uses cool blues and icy tones to create a refreshing, electric feel.
Cotton Candy incorporates bright pinks and blues to communicate sweetness and nostalgia.
Firework uses red, white, and blue to evoke celebration and summer energy.
Grape combines deep purples and black accents to create a bold, intense identity.
Pineapple Mango uses tropical yellows, greens, and oranges to communicate warmth and fruitiness.
Strawberry Watermelon features bright reds and greens to create a juicy, refreshing appearance.
Small fruit and themed illustrations positioned near the bottom of each can help communicate flavor instantly while adding personality and visual balance to the layout. These illustrations support the storytelling aspect of the packaging and create stronger flavor recognition for consumers.
Typography & Layout
Typography plays a major role in maintaining brand recognition throughout the collection. The large Mountain Dew logo remains the dominant visual element on each can, ensuring consistency and immediate identification. Its bold angular style reinforces the energetic and aggressive personality of the brand.
Flavor names are positioned beneath the logo using bold sans-serif typography that complements the existing brand identity while remaining highly legible. The typography hierarchy ensures that consumers can quickly identify both the brand and the flavor variation from a distance.
The layout maintains consistency across all six cans through structured alignment and repeated compositional elements. The logo remains centered and dominant, flavor names occupy consistent positions, and supporting illustrations anchor the lower portion of the design. This structure allows each flavor to feel unique while preserving overall cohesion throughout the series.
Flavor Identity & Brand Expansion
Each flavor variation was designed with its own distinct visual personality while remaining connected to the overall Mountain Dew-inspired identity. The flavor names and color systems work together to create recognizable experiences tied to each beverage concept.
The collection demonstrates how a consistent packaging system can support a wide range of flavor expansions while maintaining strong brand recognition. The visual flexibility of the design allows for future seasonal flavors, limited-edition releases, promotional collaborations, and themed collections without disrupting the overall identity system.
The strong use of color coding and flavor imagery also helps consumers quickly distinguish between products, improving both shelf recognition and usability.
Challenges
One of the primary challenges involved balancing consistency with individuality across the collection. Since each flavor required its own visual personality, it was important to ensure the cans still felt connected as part of the same product family.
Another challenge was working within the constraints of an already recognizable brand identity. The packaging needed to feel fresh and original without losing the visual language associated with Mountain Dew. Maintaining readability while incorporating bold graphics, vibrant colors, and layered visual elements also required careful hierarchy and spacing decisions.
Designing for a cylindrical can format presented additional challenges related to composition and visibility. The placement of typography, graphics, and illustrations needed to remain balanced and impactful from multiple viewing angles.
Outcome & Applications
The final Mountain Dew flavor collection successfully creates a bold and visually cohesive packaging system that combines strong brand recognition with playful flavor storytelling. The use of energetic color palettes, dynamic graphics, and themed illustrations results in packaging that feels immersive, memorable, and market-ready.
This project demonstrates a strong understanding of branding systems, packaging design, typography, color theory, and visual hierarchy. The collection highlights the ability to expand an established brand through creative flavor identities while maintaining consistency and recognizability across multiple variations.
The flexible visual system could easily extend into merchandise, promotional campaigns, digital advertisements, social media content, collectible packaging, and future flavor releases, making the project adaptable for broader branding applications.
